Common questions

Getting Goosery

When can I get Goosery?

Goosery opens soon. Leave your email and we'll write to you once, when it opens.

What does it run on?

Goosery is an iPhone app. You photograph your rooms with it.

What does it cost?

Goosery is free to start, and the full plan is a one-time fee. See what each plan includes.

The scan

How does a scan work?

Walk through your home with your iPhone, from the nursery to the kitchen. In each room, take one photo standing in the doorway and one crouched down at crawling height. You get a separate list for each room, such as one for the nursery and one for the kitchen. Each item names the hazard and the fix for it, and the list shows what to do first.

The free scan shows how many hazards turn up in each room. The full plan lists each one.

What does Goosery check for?

Goosery checks each room you photograph for hazards in twelve categories.

  • Furniture tip-over
  • Electrical
  • Choking
  • Falls
  • Burns and scalds
  • Water
  • Poisoning
  • Entrapment
  • Sleep setup
  • Sharp edges
  • Cords and strangulation
  • Everything else

A camera can find some of these hazards in your photos, but it can't find all of them. Goosery tells you which is which, and gives you a separate list of the ones to check by hand.

What can't a photo show?

Six things go on a separate list for you to check by hand, because a photo can't show the answer. They are the water heater's temperature, button batteries, whether furniture is anchored, where the medicine is kept, window guards, and cords behind furniture.

Goosery also tests how often the camera finds each kind of hazard. Any hazard it misses too often goes on the list you check by hand as well.

The paper What a photo can and can't show explains why a photo can’t answer each of the six.

The plan

Who reviews the standards behind the plan?

Every standard behind the plan is reviewed and signed by a practicing pediatrician. A standard is the rule Goosery writes for one hazard. Goosery writes each one from guidance published by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the American Academy of Pediatrics and ASTM International. You can read what the review covers.

How does the plan change as my baby grows?

The full plan runs month by month through four stages: rolling, crawling, pulling up and walking. A baby who pulls up can reach things a crawling baby can't, so Goosery puts each fix at the stage you'll need it. You get a reminder to re-scan your rooms as things change.

Can my partner or a grandparent use it too?

Yes, if you have the full plan. Two parents can share one plan, and either of you can assign items, check them off and add photos (Arrives in an update after Goosery opens.).

You can also send a grandparent or any other caregiver a second, simplified scan to use in their own home (Arrives in an update after Goosery opens.). Before a visit, read Your baby at a grandparent's house.

How do recall alerts work?

Recall alerts are free for anything you register in the app (Arrives in an update after Goosery opens.). With the full plan, you can also forward a receipt, and Goosery checks every item on it against recalls (Arrives in an update after Goosery opens.).
