How Goosery works

Goosery is an iPhone app for expecting and new parents, and it’s free to start. You photograph each room, and Goosery gives you a list of hazards for that room, with the fix for each one.

Goosery orders the list by when your baby rolls, crawls, pulls up and walks. Every item on it comes from a written standard.

What’s inside a standard.

A standard is the rule Goosery writes for one hazard. Everything your plan tells you about that hazard comes from it.

In your plan

Living room

Tall bookcase against the wall

The standard behind it

The hazard
This says what the hazard is, in the same words your plan uses.
Why it matters
It explains in plain words what can happen.
The fix
It tells you what to do about the hazard.
When it starts to matter
Each hazard has a stage when it starts to matter, such as rolling, crawling, pulling up or walking. Some hazards matter before your baby comes home.
How it's checked
This says whether a photo can check the hazard, or whether it goes on the list you check by hand.

The standards fall into twelve categories.

Each standard sits in one category. Goosery has standards for every room you photograph, from the nursery to the garage.

  • Furniture tip-over
  • Electrical
  • Choking
  • Falls
  • Burns and scalds
  • Water
  • Poisoning
  • Entrapment
  • Sleep setup
  • Sharp edges
  • Cords and strangulation
  • Everything else

Goosery writes the standards from published guidance.

The guidance comes from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and ASTM International.

The standards are Goosery’s own rules. None of them is a government regulation or an ASTM standard.

What the review covers.

Every standard behind the plan is reviewed and signed by a practicing pediatrician.

The review covers every part of each standard, from the hazard itself to whether a photo can check it. It doesn’t cover anything outside the standards.

In the review

  • The hazard
  • Why it matters
  • The fix
  • When it starts to matter
  • How it's checked

Outside the review

  • How the camera checks are tested
  • The rest of the app
  • Recall alerts
  • The products Goosery matches to your home

How you check items off.

You check off one item at a time, and a checked item goes gray.

The plan gives no score, grade or percentage.

It never tells you a room is done, because a photo can’t show everything and your baby reaches new things at each stage.

Living room

  • Checked: Tall bookcase against the wall
  • Cord hanging from the side table

What a photo can’t show.

Each standard says whether a photo can check it. A photo shows a bookcase standing against a wall. It can’t show what’s behind the bookcase, or what’s inside a closed drawer.

Anything a photo can’t settle goes on a separate list for you to check by hand.

  • Every hazard is spelled out, with its fix and the order to do it in.
